Home School Blessings Abound

Our family is not new to homeschooling. On the contrary, we are what some would call veterans. We homeschooled for 8 years. But for the last 4 years the kids have either been in public school or the Christian private school they are attending now. Public school was a nightmare for my two boys. The school my kids go to now was an answer to prayer. They teach more like homeschool than public or private. My children are not given a "grade" but learn the concepts and then move on. They use hands on experiences to make the lessons come alive! They use the Charlotte Mason way of teaching and all the teachers have gone to the workshops to learn that style. Yes, just like homeschool.

As other things in our lives are changing it opens up changes for our younger two children's education. Nick will not be going to that school so my younger children will not either. His education is another story for another time. For now, this is about JC and Jenni. Since I was homeschooling when they were born you could say that they were homeschooled from birth until they entered another school. I taught Jenni to read before she entered the private school kindergarten. I did the same for JC. They will finish out this school year and have the month of June "off" from official school. Then we will start back up in July. We usually start that early because we use our vacations over the summer as field trips. And we take the whole month of December off of the basics and focus solely on Christ and His birth.

As I was visiting some friend's blogs this morning I found that one of my friends is starting her homeschool journey and it inspired me to start blogging about ours. On her blog she had the reasons for homeschooling, her reasons. That got me to thinking about a list of my own. I used her headings and put my own thoughts under them.

CHOICE---We are choosing to teach our children “at home” instead of having someone else teach them. There are many options out there, as I am finding out by taking my education classes for my degree in Elementary Education. But we have chosen this path. One of the reasons we chose it is because our adventures in Homeschool are not limited to HOME. Simply because we have chosen this path does not mean we feel your choice is wrong, only different if it is not homeschooling.

LEARNING AS A LIFESTYLE---From the moment my children were born began the road of learning, for all of us. I have had to learn, continue on a daily basis, to understand each child’s needs and work with them to teach them our values. We learn everywhere we go in everything we do. That pretty much sums it up. Everything is a learning experience. From teaching them life skills to playing outside.

EDUCATIONAL STYLE---We are able to teach to each child’s needs according to their learning style. Both of my younger children have slight dyslexia so I will use techniques to help them learn to correct it. I have found a math program called Touchmath that works with that issue. I will also use Math-U-See until they get older and then we may or may not move on to Saxon Math. We will do many book studies from our favorite books and find some new favorites, I am sure. We will learn lots of math through cooking and shopping together. And our favorite way of learning is games. The kids love board games and other types of games and those are filled with math and thinking skills. We will do gardening as part of our science. John loves to do science experiments with them so I know they won’t be lacking in that area. We will use our vacations as field trips and learn history of the states and visit museums. Their computer skills will grow because we will continue to play educational games as well as teach them how to send emails to friends and family. All of these things are just a part of everyday living and will be so fun. I love the fact that they are so close in age that we can do so many things the same with minimal adjustments.

INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION---In a world of so many differences it is not hard to understand that even each child in the same family can have differences, including learning differences. Although both of my children have that one similarity there are still others that are different. At the private school they went to each child was able to learn at their own pace and in the style they needed. That is what we will do here as well. And I will be the one to see the joy in their eyes as they “get it”. Since I know my children so well, or attempt to, I can understand how to help them get past a road block in their understanding.

SOCIALIZATION---Everyone worries that homeschoolers can’t get enough socialization. That has never been a problem for my kids. They have been in numerous church activities all of their lives: choir, missions, Bible study, VBS, summer music day camp, summer camps and more. Also, we have a great Homeschool group that has sports and monthly meetings where the kids do activities. They have small groups inside the large one that meet weekly and/or bi-weekly. We also have the daycare children that are in our home every day of the week. In this way my kids get to be with children of all different ages and learn to interact with them in a positive way. There is something to be said for protecting our children from socializing with those who hold different values and morals. Until my son went to public school he did not use foul language. It is almost as if because the children he was around did it that gave him permission to do it. I don’t think so! I would like to protect my children from learning that what God says is immoral is an accepted practice and taught in public schools. I want them to know God’s truths really well before they are bombarded with the worlds view.

FLEXIBILITY---I have always loved the flexibility of homeschooling. We work at our own pace, fast or slow, we work anywhere we are at any time of the day (or night). We can go places when we need to or want to. Since John is going to seminary and we know we were called to missions many years ago we never know where God will want us to serve or for how long. We know we have a calling to Colorado, as well. So in this we will be prepared to go wherever God calls us to go and never miss a beat.

CONTROL---That is a big one for both us and the kids. While they will be free to explore more of the things that they love most, I will be in control of the things I want them to learn and not learn at this point. Or at least steer them in the right direction on some of the topics that are not in line with God’s Word. PL loves to draw so in order to help him in that area I can get him some drawing materials and set up a special place for him to draw whenever he feels like it. I can get out the MANY drawing books for children that I have acquired over the years that I have homeschooled. Also I will give him lots of opportunities to draw in project for different books and field trips. If at some point he loses interest in that and wants to focus on something else, we can do that very easily. What a joy to be able to explore wherever their imagination takes them.

FAMILY---In today’s world I am not sure our family is the “normal” American family anymore. John and I have been married (to each other only) for 25 years and are still happily married, enough to be renewing our vows next week and going on a honeymoon! We have four children. We have never been married before and our children are both of ours. Most families today have a much different “makeup”. Which is great, God made us all different. Although we have had our problems we are close and take our responsibilities as a family very seriously. It is our job as parents to show our children God’s love for them through our actions. As we move forward in this adventure of Homeschool I know that our bonds as a family will grow stronger as we spend time learning together through life.

PERSONAL GROWTH---They say that the teacher always learns more than the student. As a Homeschool mom I can attest to that. Even though the kids are learning so much we are learning not only a review of the information we are teaching but also as we find the right way to explain it to our child so they grasp it, we are learning more about our child. That process is a most amazing thing. When we are able to learn about our children that will help so much in the years to come. I know that I have grown so much over the years that I have taught my children and look forward to much more in the sweet years to come as I watch my younger children go through elementary and head into high school and sooner than I care to think about, into adulthood on their own. But I know that it is a wonderful experience because I have one that has already gone down that road. She is a wonderful, strong adult who I am so proud of. I know that while she didn’t always like being at home, she learned so much that she has taken with her in her life and she is a stronger adult for it.

DELIGHT---I want my children to learn to delight themselves in the Lord as they learn all He has for them to explore in this world He created. I know all to well the struggles of homeschooling. Things don’t always go the way you picture in your mind. That is the time to step back and evaluate what they are learning and if there is joy. If there is, relax and enjoy that feeling. I want to instill in my kids that they can learn their whole lives and never need to stop learning while they are still on this earth.

So while homeschooling does have good and bad, I can see more good coming from our adventures ahead than bad. Thanks for letting me share!

Until next time...blessings to you.

My Weekend

I had a pretty great weekend. I didn't know it was going to be so great. I just knew it was probaby going to be pretty busy, as most weekends are. When I got up that morning I jumped into the shower and got ready for a full day. Make-up and all, which I usually don't worry about if I am not doing anything important. That day was kind of important for make-up.

I went to my Weight Watcher weigh in, although I haven't been following WW in about 12 weeks. I have been doing the Perfect Weight America "diet" but have gone to WW to weigh in and because I have started going with a friend and didn't want to just stop going. She told me on Friday she couldn't do the WW anymore because of the cost but was going to do the PWA! Yeah! That is fine with me. Since I have 4 weeks until my vow renewal I am going to keep going the rest of this month since it is already paid for and I don't have a scale.
I lost 2.8 pounds for a total of 25 POUNDS!!!!! Isn't that amazing? 25 pounds in 16 weeks! I have been flying high ever since. That is so big! I went to the mall to find some new jeans because we were going to have couple pictures made that afternoon. I went to NYCO, I love that store. I took in two pairs of 8's and two pair of 10's because I just wanted to try on the 8's to see how close I was but didn't really think I would fit in them. BUT I DID!!!!!! I was again just amazed! I honestly haven't had size 8 jeans in over 17 years, if not more. I couldn't get down past the 10's.
We met a friend who was going to take the pics at the park at 2 and after we did that we went to eat with the kids. On Sunday I ended up with no daycare kids so I did some major shopping for groceries! I am going to do my very best to cook this week and not do ANY eating out at all! I sure hope I can succeed at that. I am not the one that eats out but I buy stuff for them. I don't want them eating it either! And I really want to make healthy food for my family.

So here is one of the pictures that was taken on Saturday. Some of them didn't turn out because somehow the lens got dirty after it was cleaned. But we were able to salvage a few. See my size 8 jeans?!? I am so excited! I still have a bit to go, around 20 more. But I am happy at this point. And I am looking forward to our trip in a month! We are going to have a great time.

Until next time...blessings to you.

A Fun Day Shopping With My Girls

Yesterday was a girls day of shopping. Sami asked me if it would be a good day to go dress shopping and I said sure! We went a few different places before we ended up where we finally found dresses for them. But we had to see if we could get them somewhere else just so we would know. We ended up at David's Bridal and found just the right dresses so that they "match".
Jenni's dress has to be shortened and taken in on the sides near the top because she is so tiny. And that is a size 6. To save time we took the one they had in the store and had them pin it so they could take it in and hem the bottom and have it in the 4 week time that it would have taken to order it. It would have taken another 4 weeks to hem it for a total of 8 weeks and that would be cutting it pretty close. April 2 is 9 weeks away so that would be too close for comfort for me. And you never know what could happen between then and now. She also found the shoes she wants and we got to bring those home with us. I will more than likely let her wear them for Easter, too, but I will have to see about that since Easter is before the ceremony.
We found Sami a dress that had the same type of straps and the same tool like fabric over the top, with the bottom that flowed in a similar way. She looked so beautiful in it. We did choose Apple red as the color because it will look so good with my silver dress. I will need to find ties for the boys to match somehow. We were also lucky because they just put the dresses on sale so Sami's dress was $31 less than it would have been. That helped towards the alterations on Jenni's dress!

After we paid for the dresses and shoes we came back home and I showed Sami some of the other things I had been thinking of and she gave me some great ideas. She said since it was a 25th anniversary we should have the original things at a table to show along with the wedding dress hung up in the background. I think that is a neat idea. She made me very happy yesterday and made it seem special.

I ordered my dress and it should arrive tomorrow! I will get to see if I even like it! And see how much I still need to lose and/or tone up in the next 9 weeks! I am too excited! I paid for our plane tickets for our "honeymoon", we put John's ring on layaway, picked up my rings last week and things are falling into place. I just need to figure out what I am doing with Nick while I am gone. That is my only complication at this point.

65 Days Till April 2!

Until next time...blessings to you.

Weight Update! First Goal Met!!!

Saturday I weighed in and had lost another 3 pounds! That makes 17.8 total! My 10% goal, which WW makes you set as your first goal, 10% of your weight, was 17 pounds. So Saturday I met my first goal, over 17 pounds! I am so excited! I am under 160 now!

These are size 10 pants that I have never fit into before!

My next goal will be to lose 10 more pounds in the next 10 weeks. Why 10 weeks? Good Question! In 10 weeks something very special is going to happen around here. John and I will celebrate 25 years of marriage on April 2 and will be doing a vow renewal ceremony and go on a honeymoon that we didn't do 25 years ago!!! So my goal is to be under 150 by then.

I have bought new clothes for our trip and will purchase a pretty silver dress for the vow renewal. We are exchanging new rings (white gold) and having a celebration afterwards in the fellowship hall. We are hoping that lots of family and friends will attend. A friend from church is doing the photography and we are going to have couple pics done before and then pics at the church on that night. We are going to display our wedding scrapbook and someone suggested we put pictures of our lives through the years on a disc and show them. That will take lots of work but we might do that. I will have to beg a friend to help with that since I just don't have the time. Not that I think anyone else does either, but...

71 days to go........

Until next time...blessings to you.

Christmas 2007 Memories

Christmas this year was really good and I feel so blessed in many ways. I did have daycare kids on Saturday and Sunday but was totally off on Monday and Tuesday! YAY! And John was off Sunday through Wednesday. He had to go to work on Wednesday night.

Monday we got up early and went to the mall for a morning movie, National Treasure 2. It was pretty good. Then we walked around the mall. My darlin' hubby got me some things for my nails to help them grow on their own since I don't do the fake nails anymore because the chemicals are bad to use. We went to Applebees for lunch with a gift card that one of my daycare parents gave me. It was a great lunch. She got it for me because she knows I am doing Weight Watchers and they have a WW menu. We went to the Candlelight Service at church that night. My sweet little girl fell asleep at the beginning because we had a prayer time and she never opened her eyes after that. I tired to get her to wake up so she could do the candle at the end but not even that was enough to get her to wake up. That night after the service we let the kids open one of the family gifts we bought. They picked the one that contained a Pirates of the Caribbean Scene It. We played that and then they opened the movie that we got them with the third pirate movie in it.

Tuesday, Christmas day, we got a text message from Sami saying she and her boyfriend, Tim would be here as soon as she got ready. She doesn't have a car so she had to wait till he picked her up. They got here around 6:30. We had a fire going in the fireplace and the Christmas music on. We opened the gifts and then started making breakfast while the kids played with their toys, even the big kids.

John loved his new cordless drill. He was very surprised. I am so glad I found something so cool to get him. I was excited when I came up with it because it is hard to shop for him sometimes.

Jenni loved that shirt! She got some clothes and some toys. I was glad she loved the clothes as much as she loved the toys. I can't say the same about JC He wanted a special Longhorns hoodie. I put it at the bottom of a box that had another hoodie (red) and some camo pants. He opened the box, took out the camo pants and saw the red hoodie and went to another gift. After about 20 minutes I realized he hadn't fully opened that gift and asked him to stop, slow down and look in that box again to really see what I got him. He finally saw the hoodie and has had it on almost the whole time since then.

I was given a Zune for my birthday in November and they got me a speaker for it. It is really neat. I can hook up the zune and you can hear my songs without headphones. Jenni got me a necklace from the shopping she did at school. JC got me an angel necklace. Nick got me the Bourne Ultimatum. And Sami got me a gift card from Bare Essentials, where I now buy my makeup.

Jenni got the 2007 American Girl doll, Nicki, who is from Colorado. She was so excited! She loves the cowboy boots and the puppy she came with. She also got a new Leapster. I got the two younger kids a box full of coloring books, drawing pads, colored pencils and crayons. They love to create.

Sami and JC got DS's. They were both excited. She got the special Nintendo Dogs edition and he got the special Legend of Zelda edition.

Nick got a Zune, like the one I got for my birthday. So he uses my speaker for it sometimes. It didn't take him long to get music uploaded to it. Tim helped him and me to get some things worked out with them.

A special Christmas present that I got was not something I can unwrap but rather something that will be experienced. As we were walking around the mall John asked me if Ben Bridge still had the platinum wedding set that we found a few years ago. On April 2 we will be celebrating 25 years of marriage. I have wanted a "silver" set because I like to wear silver and it is a silver wedding anniversary. So we went into the store to find out if they still had it. She looked it up on the computer and found out that since they haven't made it in a few years they only have 5 left in all of their stores. They are going to get it sent over to make sure it is the right one. While we were there we started looking at men's rings. We found a beautiful men's ring with crosses and lines chiseled in the white gold. I only paid $70 for his original wedding band which was two-toned but it has worn off. This isn't real expensive but more than what his first one cost. They are ordering that one for us too. We were so excited after we left the store. We started talking about a special trip to take in April and then got on the subject of a ceremony to renew our vows and exchange our new rings. So in April we are going to do that! Get married all over again. I am so excited! I am going to go dress shopping when I have lost some more weight because right now I have only lost 12 pounds.

I am not sure how my weight is doing. Christmas kind of threw me off even though Thanksgiving didn't. I weigh in tomorrow. With the kids home from school I haven't worked out, either. When they go back to school I will be back to the grind stone during nap time and will be able to get things going in the right direction again. I do want to be able to shop for new clothes for our trip, too. As far as the trip goes, I want so much to go to Hawaii but the chances of that are very slim. It costs so much and the time isn't on my side right now either. So I am trying to come up with ideas for a closer/shorter trip that will be wonderful for us.

I hope everyone had as wonderful of a Christmas as we did. May Christ be the center of your new year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all!!!

Until next time...blessings to you.

Happy 6th Birthday, Jennifer Lynne!

Happy Birthday, My "Lil' Angel Baby"! You turned 6 years old today. I have been looking at your baby pictures all week. I wanted to post those on here but haven't had the time to do it. I wanted to scrap them in your book but the last six years have gone by so quickly and though I have taken lots of pictures of you, I have yet to put them in a book. I vow to change that this next year so that on September 16 we can look through a scrapbook and see the years gone by of how you have grown into such a wonderful young lady. And next year I will take the time to post those special pictures of you throughout the years that should be on here for everyone to enjoy!

You were born at 9:25 a.m. on Sunday morning. You were 9 pounds 6 1/2 ounces. You were born in 55 minutes of labor. Your 14 year old sister was in the delivery room when you were born. That made it very special. We had lots of friends from church come to see you that day and the next. I can not believe 6 years has gone by already. Every year has been such a joy with you as I watch you grow and change.

Each year we let you pick the "character" theme for your party. This year your favorite thing is Holly Hobbie. They don't make party stuff yet so I went on line and made invitations and thank you notes. I got Ms Cathy to make your cake (as always, she did such a great job). I let you pick where you were going to have your party because last year you didn't get a chance to have a party. You wanted Chuck E. Cheese so we did it. I picked Saturday morning at 9:30 because I knew it would be almost empty until almost noon. We invited your friends from church, school, the apartments we teach at and just friends outside of any of those. You had 25 friends come to your party, plus parents. That is a great turn out.

Your cake turned out cute!

Your 1st Grade Teacher, Ms Kirkpatrick

Your Best Friend, Kamryn

Afterwards, we came home and unpacked all of your gifts. You played with the My Little Pony house for most of the afternoon. Even after stopping and playing with something else you always went back to that. I would say that had to be one of your very favorite gifts this year.

Today you wore your new dress that you got from one of my daycare kids. You looked so pretty! That great smile just made my day, all day. I know this next year will pass just as quickly as the last one did. So lets make sure we take some moments together and share how your day was and what you are thinking about and dreaming about. I don't want to miss a second of your life. I love you so very much, words are not enough to tell you. God gave me a great gift 6 years ago and I am forever grateful!
Love, Mommy

Until next time...blessings to you.

First Day of School

Today was my children's first day of school. They go to a private school. Public school here started last week. Our day started like every other day, only with more excitement because it was the first day. They have new teachers and new routines.
Each year, even when we homeschooled, we take a first day of school picture. This year Nick was too old, I suppose. So he didn't get his picture taken. But the other two had special new clothes and backpacks that they enjoyed taking pictures with. They really are growing up too fast!
JC had a Transformer Theme, even though he hasn't seen the movie yet. He even had a lunch box to match inside that backpack. And, yes, he is posing for this picture! He is such a ham. He thinks he is so cute! Don't tell him I said so but he really is!
Jenni was all decked out in Hello Kitty, including her lunch box! Her shoes where the only thing that didn't have Hello Kitty on it. She seemed to be in good spirits here and seemed very excited about going to 1st grade. She knew her teacher from last year and is in the same class as a lot of her friends.

As we drove up to the school we noticed right away things were different from last year. We already knew the enrollment was quite a bit larger than last year. This is only the second year for this school. But this was amazing. The parking lot was FULL! So that meant the halls would be full of children and the classrooms would be full, as well. And they were. It was wonderful to see.
Nick went right in to his 10th grade classes. JC didn't have any problems, even though he had never seen his teacher before today. She wasn't at the Back to School picnic. His room was full of children and his seat is on the front row! That is him with the blue chair near the board. Last year they had 5 desks in the room at the beginning of the year and now they have 11 students. They will not have more than 12 students in a room. He is in the 3rd grade.
Jenni, on the other hand, broke my heart. She seemed to be fine while we were dropping off her brother. I didn't worry at all because she didn't cry at all last year when she went to Kindergarten. But maybe she wasn't fine. Maybe she was feeling overwhelmed because of all the people she didn't know in the halls. When we got to the room they told us where to put her backpack and we went down the hall to put it there. As soon as she dropped off the backpack she grabbed my arm and hung on. I walked her down to the room and could tell she was feeling nervous. She started crying and I told her teacher that she was just going to have to take her. So she did and talked to her a little bit and I snuck a picture before I headed out the door. I didn't want to stay and prolong the agony on both of our parts. If you can tell from the picture, she is trying not to cry but isn't succeeding totally. It was a different story when I picked her up. She was smiling and happy! Her teacher said she was just shy all day in front of the other kids. I know she will get out of that.

So, as the first day of the 2007-2008 school year comes to a close I am thankful for my children and the school they go to.  I do miss my children while they are gone but I am trying to make sure I spend quality time with them after school and hear all about what they did and what excited them about it. How blessed I am to have 4 great kids and to watch them grow up and learn new things.

Until next time...blessings to you.
